Working with Students with Special Needs

Student Rights

Wrocław University of Science and Technology includes in its statute as one of its primary tasks "creating conditions for persons with disabilities to fully participate in the educational process and scientific research".

Organizational Support

Simplified Administration

For students with disabilities and special needs, several facilitations have been implemented in relation to the organization of the academic year and course execution:

  • the possibility of handling matters at dean's offices out of turn,
  • priority in course registration for faculty courses,
  • priority registration for physical education courses before general student registration (more information on: web.usos.pwr.edu.pl(opens in a new tab)),
  • priority registration for foreign language courses before general student registration (more information on: web.usos.pwr.edu.pl(opens in a new tab)),
  • placement at the top of the list for elective course registration after the first semester.

University Infrastructure Adjustments

Undoubtedly, one of the most visible obstacles for persons with disabilities is the architectural barrier. The university campus is gradually changing - we are revitalizing older buildings and actively working on newly constructed projects. The buildings of Wrocław University of Science and Technology are largely adapted for people with mobility impairments. They are equipped with internal and external elevators, as well as ramps. In dormitories, students can rely on adapted rooms and entire segments consisting of two rooms, a bathroom, and a kitchenette for the comfort of the student and their accompanying guardian.

Students are not just nourished by air, so we’ve made sure that the food points on the university campus are fully accessible. Apart from the YourWay navigation system with YourWay Plus markers, and easy communication between the serving area and tables, students can rely on the kindness and assistance of cafeteria staff.

Teaching Support

At Wrocław University of Science and Technology, there are no special educational courses specifically for students with disabilities. However, the Study Regulations(opens in a new tab) include provisions that address the needs of students with disabilities, enabling individualized study organization and:

  • changing the form of participation in classes,
  • different forms and extended time for course completion/exams,
  • dean's leave,
  • health leave.

The regulations also include provisions concerning students with special needs.

Additionally, as part of course adaptations, we provide:

  • adjustment of teaching materials to an accessible format (particularly for blind and visually impaired students) in accordance with the characteristics of the exact sciences, fulfilling all WCAG 2.1 requirements,
  • the use of alternative forms of content recording: use of a laptop with speech magnification software, tablet, Braille devices, voice recorder (students must inform the instructor in advance!),
  • educational assistant support, who will help with note-taking, assist in communication with instructors, or help with reaching the classroom,
  • the possibility of hiring a sign language interpreter,
  • foreign language courses.

All adjustments are made individually to suit the student's needs and possibilities. We recommend that students contact the instructors directly during the first classes or during consultations. Support may also be provided by a consultant for support people with special needs, who is available at the Accessibility Department from Monday to Friday (8:00 AM - 2:00 PM).

Wrocław University of Science and Technology Alumni Association Scholarship

In the summer semester, students can apply for a one-time scholarship awarded for academic performance in the winter semester. Students from any year and type of studies (full-time and part-time) are eligible.

Student Obligations

Students with special needs, while receiving support in various areas at the university, are not exempt from any obligations set out in the Wrocław University of Science and Technology regulations.

Confirmation of Student Rights

Important:

Only Accessibility Department staff are authorized to view medical or other documentation (including disability certificates) confirming special needs.

NO OTHER STAFF MEMBER IS ALLOWED TO RECEIVE SUCH DOCUMENTATION FROM A STUDENT!

Wrocław University of Science and Technology complies with GDPR, including the protection of particularly sensitive data. Accessibility Department staff have special authorizations to accept, verify, and store documentation containing sensitive data.

If a student wishes to present such a document, they must be directed to the Accessibility Department. Emails containing scanned medical documents should not be stored.

Persons wishing to use the accommodations under the Study Regulations, including educational adaptations, must first contact the Accessibility Department and then inform each instructor by email, through the dean’s office, or personally, about the preferred forms of support. Accessibility Department staff can, at the instructor's request, provide information on whether a given student is registered in the database of students with special needs, without disclosing specific details.
