Mobility Impairment
What is Mobility Impairment?

Mobility impairment is a broad term that refers to various physical limitations affecting one's ability to move, coordinate movements, and perform daily tasks. It may involve both permanent and temporary conditions.
Common causes include:
- Spinal injuries, bone, or joint injuries,
- Neurological diseases affecting muscle control and movement,
- Congenital defects causing permanent mobility restrictions,
- Degenerative joint diseases or other degenerative conditions,
- Rehabilitation periods after surgeries or injuries.
Mobility impairment can be:
- Permanent – e.g., resulting from serious injuries, degenerative diseases, or neurological conditions,
- Temporary – e.g., after a surgery or fracture, when mobility limitations occur only for a limited time.
Individuals with mobility impairments may require support in daily functioning, such as through infrastructure adjustments (e.g., ramps, elevators, wide doors) or specialized equipment to aid mobility and full participation in academic and social life.
Examples of Individuals with Mobility Impairments:
- Person using a wheelchair due to a congenital defect, such as spina bifida, requiring adapted infrastructure such as ramps and elevators.
- Person after limb amputation using a prosthesis. Depending on the situation, they may also use crutches or a wheelchair for longer distances.
- Person undergoing rehabilitation after hip surgery, temporarily using crutches and avoiding stairs, preferring elevator access.
- Person with cerebral palsy, experiencing difficulties with coordination and balance, using a walker and needing more space and adapted workstations.
- Person with advanced osteoarthritis, experiencing pain with prolonged walking, using a walker and requiring easy access to elevators and parking.
