Neurodiversity (Autism Spectrum, ADHD, Dyslexia...)

What is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity refers to the different traits of the human brain, such as alternative ways of thinking, perceiving the world, and behaviors resulting from this. The term was first used in the 1990s by Judy Singer. Neurodevelopmental disorders in the DSM-5 classification include intellectual disabilities, communication disorders, autism spectrum disorders (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), specific learning disabilities, motor disorders, and other neurodevelopmental disorders.

Note: Neurodivergent individuals do not always have a disability certificate. Medical documentation confirming special needs (optionally a certificate from a psychologist) should be submitted to the Accessibility Department.

Examples of Neurodivergent Individuals:

  1. Autism spectrum disorder (including Asperger's syndrome).
  2. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD).
  3. Dyscalculia (difficulty with mathematics).
  4. Dysgraphia (difficulty with writing).
  5. Dyslexia (difficulty with reading).
  6. Dyspraxia (difficulty with coordination).
  7. Sensory processing disorders.
  8. Some also include mental illnesses, such as bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and others, under neurodiversity.
